Strand FThe Promise of Dual Language Immersion and Bilingual Education: Transformation Through Identity Development, Social Justice, and Translanguaging

What is the promise of transformational Dual Language Immersion for us? This strand will bridge theory, pedagogy, and practice around three fundamental areas: identity, social justice, and translanguaging. By addressing the systemic inequalities in dual language immersion programs, this strand will provide practical applications inside and outside the DLI classroom. Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • expand their bilingual critical lenses and increase linguistic awareness through and beyond their identities;
  • explore how exclusionary trends jeopardize the equity vision of DLI;
  • learn the theories behind translanguaging and how it can be applied in dual language settings;  and…
  • dialogue and collaborate with dual language immersion teachers from across California.
