From Empathy to Action: Social Justice
in the Japanese Classroom
This strand explores strategies for building intercultural communicative competence and empowering global citizenship. Participants delve into strategies to raise learners’ awareness of local and global social justice issues and design content-driven unit plans. The participants will create lessons aligned to the California World Language Standards and Framework that promote global competency and intercultural citizenship. Participants will design lessons that promote communication in Japanese utilizing content knowledge from other disciplines to address social justice issues in both local and global communities. In this strand, presenters will guide participants to design units with summative and formative assessment tasks and activities aligned to the California World Languages Framework.
